Reading and Writing in English Classes One of the many features of middle and high schools, and one that has significant instructional implications, is the fact that teachers and their adolescent students do not spend the entire day together. In elementary school classrooms, teachers integrate their reading and writing instruction while teaching content. These editions are longer than the standard editions; in fact, they are so filled with extra elements, such as nonfiction essays, creative writings, and photographs, that the student books come in two separately bound parts. These editions are particularly appropriate for those pursuing a classical education, expanding the material devoted to the Roman context, including maps, biographical sections on Caesar, and a series of poems by Michael Clay Thompson.
They also contain essays by Thomas Milton Kemnitz on Roman architecture, construction methods, roads, and buildings. The new sections are buttressed by more than a hundred photographs of the world that was Rome. The fourth book in the series is The Vocabulary of Literature, which highlights the vocabulary commonly used by the greatest authors of English and American literature.
This book allows students to see the vocabulary they have been studying in the context of the fiction and nonfiction writings of immortal authors.
Latin and Greek stems are presented as a system of thinking, a way of building, analyzing, spelling, pronouncing, using, and choosing words. Consequently, students will know far more than the list of words encountered in this course—the tens of thousands of words that are not listed but that are expressions of the system.
Every test reinforces every list. Through constant review, students build ever-increasing familiarity. The books also include historical essays written by Dr.
Thomas Kemnitz about ancient Greece and Rome. All three books include discussions, maps, timelines, and scores of photographs of ancient buildings, sculptures, and artifacts.
